So, what has changed the most in video production over the past few decades? My answer is this: pretty much everything. Except for, of course, what’s most important.
From the camera lens to storage devices to the editing suite, nothing is the same as it was when I began my journey in production. Then there’s color-correcting software, computerized motion-control devices and almost immediate file sharing. In this new world, ever-evolving technology is part of our MO. And though each new advancement begs each user to adjust their technique, the artistry always remains.
I believe all this change is good for our production team. It keeps us sharp. Frankly, I’m in awe of the can-do spirit of my coworkers—and their willingness to embrace change, day in, day out.
Is there an easier/cheaper/faster/better way? What are the new tools out there?
We ask ourselves questions like these in part because we love to geek out with newfangled techy toys. But the primary reason is to make a better, more effective piece of communication—be it a fundraising video, TV spot or online ad.
The tools of the trade have changed—drastically. But the tool users? Not so much. We’re still human. And hooray for that. Capturing and evoking genuine emotions and sculpting them into an artful experience is fundamentally a human challenge.
I’m no fortuneteller, but I’m confident that task—and that privilege—will stay with us always.
